Module 5 · Lesson 1 of 4

Keep the Promises You Make to Yourself

Self-trust is built the same way as trust with anyone else — by doing what you said you'd do, especially in small things.

Think about someone you trust completely. Chances are, they earned it the boring way — by doing what they said they'd do, over and over, especially in small things. Now here's the uncomfortable question: do you trust yourself that way?

Most of us are fantastic at keeping promises to others and terrible at keeping them to ourselves. We'll move mountains for a friend and then blow off our own walk, our own bedtime, our own plan — and every broken little promise teaches our brain the same lesson: don't count on her.

So we start rebuilding, one brick at a time. Make one tiny promise to yourself today — “I'll make the bed,” “I'll drink a glass of water” — and keep it. That's it. That's a brick in the foundation. Do it daily and the foundation gets solid enough to build a life on. Self-trust isn't a feeling you wait for. It's a record you build.

Your Now-Step

Make one tiny promise to yourself today (“I'll make the bed,” “I'll drink a glass of water”) — and keep it. That's a brick in the foundation.

A moment to reflect

What kind of person are you becoming, one small kept promise at a time?

Private — these notes never leave your device.

“Move forward.”
